551 Information Processing [Course Page]1. Internet - a multi-network of computers providing access around the globe - "network of networks" - "information super highway" 2. Domain - areas or sections into which the Internet is divided. Some common domains are: .mil = military .edu = education .com = commercial .org = organization .gov = government .net = network provider 3. Browser - program that provides access to the World Wide Web. Netscape is an example of a WWW browser. 4. Hypertext Link - a "clickable" image or text to go to other locations. 5. Hypermedia - documents that contain links to more than one kind of media (video, sound, pictures, graphics, or animation). 6. URL's - Uniform Resource Location - unique address for a location on the Internet World Wide Web. URL's are case-sensitive and must be keyed exactly as they are written. 7. Home Page - indexes that list specific topics on a single subject. 8. Server - any computer attached directly to the Net that provides services to Internet users - also known as a host computer. 9. Bookmarks or Favorites - allow you to create lists of frequently used sites or URL's. 10. Boolean Operator - the use of joining words including "and" "or" or "not" to describe the logical relationship of one or more search terms with one or more other search terms. 11. Search Engines - a database or index of home pages that locates information on the World Wide Web. Examples of search tools are Yahoo, Excite, Lycos, Infoseek, Webcrawler, Alta Vista 12. Intranet - a private network inside a company or organization that was developed using Web tools which runs internally. 13. E-mail - electronic mail - a concisely written text message that one person can send to and have received by others anywhere in the world via computers and modems. An e-mail message should contain the receiver's address and a subject line. 14. Download - to transfer data or programs from the Internet to your computer by means of a modem and phone line. 15. HTML - Hypertext Markup Language - language used to create web pages. 16. Modem - connects computers in a network to transmit data via phone lines. 17. Chat Rooms - places where computer users can type messages in real time on the World Wide Web. 18. FTP - File Transfer Protocol- a method of transferring files (generally larger files like graphics or software) across computer networks. 19. WWW - World Wide Web - a graphic-centered hypermedia system enabling computer users to move from one site to another by clicking on hypertext links. 20. Surf - to search for information that is not easily found; to look for something new.
