Overview

The ELL (formerly ESL - English as a Second Language) Program at Elk Grove High School has been in existence for over 20 years. Over 190 students from 19 countries attend Elk Grove High School with the largest language groups being Spanish, Gujarati, and Polish. Their common goal is the desire to speak English in order to become an integral part of our Elk Grove student body and community.

The ELL program is a reading-based curriculum that places students in three distinct levels and works to develop comprehension, vocabulary, and composition skills. ELL students receive two hours of English each day as well as content area instruction in history, sociology, math, science, computers, health, and art in sheltered English. These courses are designed to teach all essential concepts of the class at a level the students can understand. Our Instructional Aides and our ELL guidance counselor help the ELL department see that the needs of our growing population of language students are fully met.

"The Wonderful World of ELL" is a magazine devoted to multi-culturalism produced by the ELL staff and students. It showcases the creative writing and art work of our multi-lingual students. Every year the staff and instructional assistants plan meaningful field trips for our ELL students to such places as museums, college campuses, businesses, baseball games, and theatrical presentations. The highlight of the ELL school year is our annual Awards show featuring talent and culinary traditions of our diverse student population.
