50's

Instruction in math 50 - 55 provides improvement in arithmetic skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) with whole numbers, fractions, percents, and decimals. These courses also provide instruction in practical application of these arithmetic skills and the basic ideas of algebra, geometry, numerical trigonometry, probability, and statistics. Problem solving strategies receive special emphasis. This series of courses is designed for students with limited proficiency in mathematics.

60's and 70's

As was previously mentioned both levels use the integrated math curriculum. The difference is the speed at which each course progresses.

The mathematics department at Elk Grove has adopted an integrated math program which has been carefully examined and researched by the staff for two years before it was adopted. The program incorporates a variety of strategies, including; visual and hands-on approaches, real life applications, technology, and group work. Over a three or four year sequence of courses, Integrated Mathematics teaches the same mathematical topics as a contemporary Algebra, geometry, and Algebra 2 sequence. Instead of being divided into separate courses, algebra and geometry are taught in each of the years. In addition, topics from logical reasoning, measurement, probability, statistics, discrete mathematics, and functions are interwoven throughout each year. This program is based on the recommendations of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and other curriculum groups that emphasize problem solving, critical thinking, communication, and connections among mathematical topics and connections between math and other subject areas.

We are using the integrated series published by McDougal Littell/Houghton Mifflin.

For those students who did not start in the integrated program they take a traditional curriculum. Those students who enter in the 70's sequence will have time to take optional courses in functions, trigonometry, discrete math, and probability and statistics.

90's

The students who are enrolled in these courses come to the high school having completed basic algebra. Students who complete this sequence will take BC Calculus during their senior year.
