Natural Sources of this nutrient in foods

Selenium is found in soil and mainly plant foods. Some meats and seafood carry selenium, mainly meats in the U.S.  are common sources of dietary selenium. Selenium is found in some nuts such as Brazil nuts and walnuts.

How it is used by the body?

Selenium is used in small doses to make selenoproteins. These proteins are essential for antioxidant enzymes, which help prevent cellular damage from free radicals. Free radicals may contribute to the development of cancer and or heart disease.

Effects if this Nutrient is not present

Selenium is needed for the immune system to function normally as well as the thyroid gland. Not enough selenium may result in an enlarged heart or heart failure. Some people whose digestive systems do not function are fed selenium through an IV so they do not develop a selenium deficiency.
