The Guardian:
Elk Grove High School's Newspaper
|
Our award-winning school newspaper, The Guardian, is published twelve
times each year. The paper covers school, local, and national news. English
teacher Mary Larson has been the sponsor of the paper for twelve years.
Current co-editors-in-chief are seniors, Mithra Hariharan and Jacqueline
Ostrowski.
The Guardian has won the top awards from most competitions every year
for the past ten years. These awards include the following:
- International First Place from Quill and Scroll
- Gold Medalist from Columbia Press Association
- All American from National Press Association
- First Place with Special Merit from American Scholastic Press Association
- Blue Ribbons for individual writing at Northern Illinois School Press
Association.
- Honorable Mentions for individual writing at Northern Illinois School
Press Association
- Golden Eagle from the Northern Illinois School Press Association
Guardian students often receive special opportunities to experience firsthand
the life of a journalist. For example, on October 27, 1997, the sponsor
and the two co-editors, Hariharan and Ostrowski, were invited to Hillary:
A Chicago Celebration. The students shook the First Lady's hand and interviewed
Hillary Clinton's best friend from high school. During that interview they
met several of Mrs. Clinton's childhood friends.
