Since1980 Elk Grove High School has had a Certified Athletic Trainer. Presently, Elk Grove High School has two Certified and Licensed Athletic Trainers (ATC/L). The Certified Athletic Trainer is a highly educated and skilled professional specializing in athletic health care. In cooperation with local physicians and other allied health personnel, the Elk Grove High School Certified Athletic Trainers function as integral members of the athletic health care team.
Athletic Trainers are certified by the NATIONAL ATHLETIC TRAINERS ' ASSOCIATION and are licensed in the State of Illinois to practice athletic training. Certified athletic trainers have fulfilled the requirements for certification established by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification, Inc. (NATABOC).
The athletic trainer plays a unique and important role in the health care system of the 90's preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating sports injuries. In this role, the athletic trainer can help athletes avoid unnecessary medical treatment and disruption of normal daily activities. Athletic training is recognized by the American Medical Association as an allied health care profession. Specifically, the athletic trainer specializes in five practice areas or domains:
As part of a complete health care team, the athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician and in cooperation with other health care workers, athletic administrators, coaches and parents. The athletic trainer gets to know each athlete individually and can therefore treat the athlete's injury appropriately.
An athletic trainer's day may, for example, include these tasks:
These duties require extensive knowledge and strong decision making skills, obtained through the athletic trainer's experience and education.
Students who have shown interest and have taken the student athletic trainers' course, can become a member of the student athletic trainers program. Student Athletic Trainers assist the Certified Athletic Trainers in everyday duties such as taping, rehabilitation, practice/game coverage, and training room management. This is an ideal program for students who will want to pursue the medical profession. Students who have been student trainers have gone on to become Certified Athletic Trainers, Physical Therapists and Physicians.
