GENERAL
Q1: How do I make an appointment with Mr. Genovese?
A: To make an appointment, simply stop by the CCC and set up an appointment, or call Mrs. Camp, the CCC assistant, at 718-4442. Parents or students can make appointments. Before meeting, the student is required to fill out the “College Planning Folder” given to each student during Junior Guidance last winter. If you are unable to locate it, another one will be given to you upon request.
Q2: Do I need an appointment with Mr. Genovese?
A: All appointments are optional and are student/parent-initiated. The main focus of the appointment will be to discuss possible schools, their requirements, etc. If a student already knows where they want to apply and has no other questions, then an appointment may not be necessary. When in doubt, come into the CCC for clarification.
TRANSCRIPTS
Q3: How do I obtain a transcript for my college application?
A: Transcript request forms are in the red envelopes that can be picked up in the College Career Center (CCC). They can also be downloaded from the “Forms” link off the CCC home page of the EGHS website. Do NOT go directly to the registrar to request transcripts for college admission.
Q4: What is an official transcript?
A: An official transcript has the school’s seal, registrar’s signature, and is printed on special paper. Every college and university requires an official transcript as part of the application. Official transcript requests for college admission must be made through the College/Career Center. Unofficial transcripts can be obtained from the student’s counselor.
TESTING
Q5: What is EGHS’ testing number or code?
A: Our testing code is 141-778
Q6: How do I register for tests?
A: You have 2 options:
- Pick up a registration packet in The Assessment Center, Room 111.
- Register on-line for the
Q7: What test(s) should I take?
A: You have to take one ACT as part of the PSAE. If you are planning on attending a four-year college, you should take the ACT again, at least once on a National Test Date (see above calendar). It is up to you if you would like to take the SAT. Both the ACT and SAT tests can be used for college admission. Most Midwest schools prefer the ACT, while east and west coast colleges prefer the SAT. If you are unsure, take both tests. It cannot hurt you.
Q8: Should I take these tests if I am not planning on going to college?
A: You must take the ACT as part of the required Prairie State Exam, which is given to all juniors in April on site at EGHS. The only exceptions are ELL students, who take the IMAGE test in April.
Q9: Does Harper College require testing?
A: No, however, they use ACT scores for placement purposes. Therefore, it is to your advantage to take these tests seriously so that you do not have to take remedial classes at Harper that receive no college credit.
Q10: May I apply to college without testing?
A: Yes, although the final decision will require scores on either the ACT or SAT. In other words, you can apply, but eventually you must submit test scores.
Q11: How do I send the scores to the colleges?
A: When you take the ACT, you can indicate on your answer sheet what schools you would like to receive your scores. (Remember, ACT and SAT scores are not printed on your transcript!) If you decide later that you want other schools to receive scores, simply go to the website and send them electronically (each report will cost $7-8. to send).
Q12: I did horribly on my ACT’s and now College X has the scores! What do I do?
A: Don’t panic. Take the test again and re-send the scores. The colleges MUST accept the highest composite score no matter how many times you’ve taken the test.
Q13: How important is taking the optional writing component for the ACT?
A: When in doubt, take it. Most state schools do not require the ACT writing part, however other schools vary. If you are unsure of where you will be applying, it is in your best interest to take an ACT with the writing portion.
