English Language Learners (ELL) Counselor

The ELL* Counselor is responsible for helping students with limited English proficiency be successful in our school setting. This involves providing a very close, personal relationship with this special population to meet social, emotional, and often cultural adjustment needs with sensitivity despite language barriers. Each new ELL student to E.G.H.S. needs to be individually tested (often in their native language) and foreign transcripts need to be translated into equivalent acceptable high school credits. In addition to working with students the ELL Counselor works closely with certified ELL staff to make program and placement decisions and provides on-going monitoring of student progress as they proceed through the ELL classes toward the goal of placement in mainstream classes. The ELL Counselor provides an important service within the Counseling Department to support students with varied cultural backgrounds and significant language limitations.
