Adolescence is a period of on-going changes, both physically and emotionally, accompanied by increased demands and frequent challenges. The Student Services Department at Elk Grove High School supports students throughout this period of transition by providing a comprehensive approach that includes:

Guidance and Counseling Services

The Counseling Department is made up of nine Counselors, one Social Worker and one Psychologist. Of the nine Counselors, seven are considered Generalist Counselors, have students of all ages, and participate in a team approach using a developmental counseling curriculum. One Generalist Counselor also has many students in the TDP program (Talent Development Program) and provides special attention to their needs. There are two specialist Counselors: ESL (English as a Second Language) Counselor, and College Counselor.

Health Services

The certified school nurse establishes and maintains a comprehensive school health program which meets the existing needs and identifies future needs of the school community. Major components include supervising student compliance with physical and immunizations regulations, health counseling, vision screening, emergency care for illness and/or injuries, and evaluating and recommending educational adaptations for students with medical/physical limitations.

Special Education Services

The Special Education Department includes a Coordinator, six certified Special Education teachers, three Instructional Aides, and Supported Educational staff members (one teacher and one Instructional Assistant) of NSSEO. This Department services students who have been identified as having a disability and require specialized instruction or related services to meet their educational needs. This is accomplished in a variety of ways which include, but are not limited to: providing direct instruction in many content areas through special education classes and team taught courses; providing support/consultation for classroom teachers in the use of specific strategies, methods and techniques; providing tutorial assistance and remedial instruction to students; monitoring students' progress and providing ongoing communication to parents and staff regarding the needs of the special education student at E.G.H.S. In addition, the Department offers a wide range of vocational experiences through their own and NSSEO resources.

Speech and Language Services

A speech/language therapy program is available to students who have been identified as having a speech or language disorder. Students meet with a certified speech/language pathologist on a regularly scheduled basis and may have impairments of the following areas: articulation, language, voice, stuttering and/or hearing. Comprehensive diagnostic testing to determine the presence of a speech/language disorder is available upon request or referral.

Although this department is divided into specific areas we strive to work together as a team to provide services of high quality to all students throughout their high school years.
