FIRST SEMESTER 2011
Students interested in learning about career exploration opportunities should see Elk Grove High School’s
Career Advisor, Mrs. Brottman, in Student Services. Some opportunities occur during the school day (ie
Career Treks, Speakers) and require both parent and teacher permission. However many opportunities
occur after school, on the weekend or over the summer, and may require registration or an application.

Aviation Career Exposition invites prospective Aviators to an Open House on Saturday, September 17, 2011
@ Chicago Executive Airport, 1071 South Wolf Road, Wheeling (Hangar 10, Bays 1 & 2). Free admission
Aviation Departments of the Leading Colleges and Universities, United States Armed Forces Aviation, Local Flight Schools and Governmental Agencies, Aviation-Oriented organizations and Groups with Keynote speaker Jamail Larkins, President at Ascension Aircraft. SIU and American Airlines jointly sponsor American Airlines Career Day. Students interested in either
piloting or mechanical careers in aviation are offered the opportunity to "fly in free" from Chicago O’Hare
to SIU. This event will take place on a Saturday in October, but advance registration is a requirement as

Career Nights @ Elk Grove High School October 12, 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm Approximately 20
professionals working in arts and communications-related careers and human services-related careers,
will speak to students regarding their educational background and details associated with working in their
chosen area of expertise. No advance sign up required, both students and parents are welcome.
Career Nights @ Prospect High School October 18. 6:30 pm – 9pm Approximately 20 professionals
working in health-related careers and natural resource-related careers, will speak to students regarding
their educational background and details associated with working in their chosen area of expertise.

Career Nights @ Wheeling High School November 2 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm Approximately 20
professionals working in engineering and industrial technology-related careers and business and computer related
careers, will speak to students regarding their educational background and details associated with
working in their chosen area of expertise. No advance sign up required, both students and parents are welcome.
Chicago Architecture and design College Day - Saturday in October. Register at www.chicagocareerday.org
ACE Mentor Program, introduces high school juniors and seniors to careers in architecture, engineering and
construction management. Application at www.acementor.org/registration and are due in early October.
American Heart Association will hold its annual Scientific Sessions, the world's largest meeting of scientists
and healthcare professionals, devoted to the science of cardiovasculasr disease and stroke, at Chicago's McCormick Place.
In November, from 10am - 3pm, they are hosting junior and senior science students and their teachers.
Appllication is due early October. See Mrs. Brottman in student services for an application.
Advocate Lutheran General Hospital is hosting a Health Careers Night on Wednesday, November 2, from
6pm – 8pm in Grainger Atrium and the Yacktman Children’s Pavillion, 1775 W. Dempster St., Park Ridge.
Learn about health career choices, talk with various health care professionals and obtain information about
educational requirements and salary ranges. There is no charge. Registration is not required. Free
parking and shuttle service to the hospital is offered in the surface lot north of Dempster Street.
On select Saturdays during fall and winter, the Chicago Architecture Foundation offers Saturday in the
Studio, a series of skill-building workshops for high school students. Professional architects and designers
teach each workshop, which runs from 10am – 2:30pm. Advance registration is required. Fee is $15 per
workshop for students in private and suburban schools, and lunch is included in the fee. Go to

ASK ABOUT THESE INDEPENDENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPRING & SUMMER
February 2012 - Northwestern University and The Society of Women Engineers present a Career Day For
Girls at McCormick School of Engineering in Evanston, in February. Girls will participate in design
workshops, enjoy hands-on experiments and lab visits, and explore the world of engineering careers
including biomedical, chemical, civil, environmental, industrial and mechanical engineering. Advance
registration and $5 registration fee required. Registration deadline early February.
Argonne National Lab’s hosts: Science Careers In Search of Women Conference for high school girls
interested in careers in science and technology. Meet female scientists and engineers. Take laboratory
tours. Snacks and lunch provided. Learn about careers in physical science, engineering and life sciences.
Event will be in late April. Registration deadline is early March. Early registration is required.
See Mrs. Brottman to register and obtain a permission form (since this event typically takes place on a
school day). Students must provide their own transportation.
Midwestern University/Chicago College of Pharmacy, in conjunction with Osco and Walgreens, offers an
intensive, 6-week paid Summer Internship available to students completing their junior or senior high
school year in June 2011. Internship begin mid June and conclude early August. Time commitment is 8
hours a day M-F. Students spend half the time at the Chicago College of Pharmacy and half the time at an
assigned pharmacy near their residence. Students provide their own transportation. They usually have an
open house from 4:00-6:00 pm in mid February at the Chicago College of Pharmacy in
Downers Grove, IL. Application deadline is beginning of March.
The American Cancer Society supervises an 8-week paid ($2,000 stipend) Summer Research Program for
high school students in their junior year. Thirty top science Illinois high school juniors will be
selected from the pool of applications received. Accepted students will be introduced to scientific research
and will work in one of Illinois’ top research labs with leading cancer researchers on an independent,
limited and achievable research project 5 days a week for 8 weeks. Application deadline is March 1.
Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne, IL) offers a paid 8-week Laboratory Research Program for college
bound high school graduates. Research experiences will be available in the areas of biology, chemistry,
computer science, engineering, energy, conservation, environmental impact and technology, materials
science, mathematics, nanomaterials, advanced nuclear energy systems, and physics. Application
deadline is typically mid March.
Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling (formerly Palwaukee Airport) invites today’s youth to explore the
possibility of a career in aviation during their Aviation Career Expo. This event is typically held in on a
Saturday in March. Visit aviation industry professionals, meet the nations top schools, obtain the latest
information in aviation scholarship opportunities, tour aircraft display. No registration required. Watch
for details.

Summer program at Valparaiso School of Law is available for students entering their sophomore, junior or
senior year in high school. It's rather expensive, but they do have some scholarship money, so
an early application might help.
